Baker and Emily Mayfield are headed to their third city of the year after the 27-year-old quarterback was released by the Carolina Panthers on Monday and claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Rams.
A year that Emily called the "weirdest, most confusing, challenging, soul-searching" of her life, which she said on her Instagram story on Tuesday. "But the important thing is, we’ve done it together and with God at our center. I’m really proud of where we are, and where we’re headed.”
Mayfield, the first-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, signed with the Panthers in July four months after the quarterback requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns.
The Panthers released Mayfield in a decision that interim head coach Steve Wilks said was mutual between both sides.
The Rams then claimed him, adding depth at quarterback after losing Matt Stafford to a neck injury in Week 11. Stafford is eligible to return to the IR in Week 17 but Rams coach Sean McVay said he is unlikely to return to the field this season.
“Feeling grateful tonight,” Emily said. “For the whirlwind, the chaos, the craziness. I’m thankful for the opportunity to walk alongside my bff for this once-in-a-lifetime rollercoaster ride.
“I’m so thankful for our time in Charlotte. I met some REALLY incredible people & fell in love with an amazing city. You will certainly see more of us CLT!”
Mayfield played in seven games for the Panthers this season, going 1-6. He threw for 1,313 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 52 yards and one touchdown.
He is headed to the defending Super Bowl champs who are anything but poised to make the playoffs. The Rams sit at 3-9 in the gutter of the NFC West.
Mayfield could be active as soon as Thursday, when the Rams face the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday Night Football.
