Vikings Fans Confused By Sam Darnold-Daniel Jones Decision
The Minnesota Vikings (9-2) made an interesting choice at quarterback ahead of their Week 13 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
Minnesota is inching closer to clinching a playoff spot in quarterback Sam Darnold's first season with the team. The Vikings are one game back from the 10-1 Detroit Lions for first place in the NFC North.
Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz on Wednesday, the Vikings are signing former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones to the practice squad.
"Former Giants QB Daniel Jones is signing with the Vikings, sources tell Fox Sports NFL," Schultz posted on X. "Jones had several options, but prioritized a team in contention with a QB-friendly offensive system and a coaching staff known for maximizing player potential."
Several NFL teams were interested in Jones' services after the Giants released the former first-round pick out of Duke on Friday.
Darnold has had his ups and downs for Minnesota in 2024, including his low-point game in a 12-7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars when he threw three interceptions. He had a total of five interceptions over two-week span.
Darnold has better stats than Jones in 2024, throwing for 2,717 yards, 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions compared to Jones' 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions with the Giants.
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell hinted the team might have an interest in bringing Jones to the team as Darnold has battled minor injuries this season. Plus, the team could use better backup help, especially with the playoffs coming up.
Still, many Minnesota fans were confused at the plan going forward with Darnold and Jones. With first-round rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy expected to return from his torn meniscus in 2025, there might not be room for Darnold and Jones.
Some fans wondered if Jones would replace Darnold before the playoffs.
"Sam Darnold on the hot seat," asked a fan.
"Vikings don’t believe in Sam darnold," posted a fan.
"Someone explain to me like I’m 5. Isn’t Sam Darnold playing good???? Why would they do this," asked another.
"The Vikings? So what’s the vision with Sam Darnold, JJ McCarthy, and now Daniel Jones? KOC gonna develop all of em on the field together?! Interesting decision," one person commented.
"The Vikings just got worse," suggested a fan. "They improved their number 2 QB, but I bet there’s going to be a QB controversy before the end of the year. One bad Sam Darnold game, let the chirping for Jones commence."
"Sam Darnold put on a short leash now," asked a fan.
"Sam Darnold absolutely fuming," believes a fan.
The Vikings now have Darnold, Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien on the 53-man roster. Notably, Darnold's contract expires at the end of the season.
