Man-Genius Part II? Former Jets Coach Teased As Potential Return Candidate
Since the New York Jets fired general manager Joe Douglas, one of their former vibrant head coaches has made a push to try and get the job he once had with the team.
But Rex Ryan isn't the former head coach that the Jets should be focusing on to one NFL Insider.
In her latest article at The Athletic, Dianna Russini made it clear that the Jets are open to plenty of different options to save their struggling franchise, and former head coach Eric Mangini may be better equipped to do that over Ryan.
“Sure, Mangini’s tenure wasn’t perfect, but his emotional intelligence, attention to detail, and ability to turn things around quickly left a lasting impact on the franchise,” Russini said. “If the Jets really want to bring back someone who knows this organization and can lay a sustainable foundation, maybe it’s time to give the man once known as ‘Mangenius’ another shot. I’m told the Jets are open to all options at this point as they continue to gather information on who their top candidates will be.”
In fairness to "Man-genius," the Jets did bring in a strong collection of talent under his watchful eye. From 2006-2008, the Jets were able to draft top players like D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, Darrelle Revis, and David Harris.
Other veterans like Brad Smith and Leon Washington may not have spent their entire careers with the Jets, but they did have long careers.
It was Mangini's roster additions that actually led the way for Ryan to take the team to back-to-back conference titles due to Mangini collapsing to end the 2008 season with Brett Favre as his quarterback.
If the Jets are going to consider going back to their coaching well, hiring Mangini for the role may not be the best overall way forward. Hiring him as an executive to help with scouting players, though, would be an intriguing option.
Outside of Douglas, few executives in recent history for New York have been able to be successful at finding young talent quite like Mangini. And it should at least be an intriguing option for the Johnson family to consider.
