Unfortunately, my dailyfantasycafe.com-optimized FanDuel lineup fell short due to unexpected stinker showing from Antonio Brown, Rashad Jennings, Doug Baldwin and T.Y. Hilton. These four guys COMBINED for 20.5 points and were the reason the lineup failed to break 100 points.
The other lineup I built for GPPs fared much better, scoring 135.12 points and cashed in all the contests I entered them in. That was due to solid performances from everyone with the exception of Duke Johnson Jr.
The DraftKings lineups were more of the same. Cam Newton led the way in both and those lineups cashed in a few 50/50 games and even one GPP. The GPP lineup with LeGarrette Blount ended up with 140.02 points. Meanwhile the Newton-led Cash lineup with the aforementioned less-than-stellar Brown and A.J. Green ended up with 144.32 and cashed as well in both formats.
This week it should be safe to assume the elite options won’t all struggle like they did in Week 2, but you never know. The lineups from last week would have been even better if just one of Brown, Green or Hilton had met value. But that’s the beauty of fantasy football, right?
But as the saying goes, hindsight is always 20/20, so let's close book on last week and turn our focus to making some money in all formats in Week 3.
What I will be doing in this space is sharing my top plays for the week, a value play, and most importantly a lineup or two. I will likely be focusing on cash games (50/50 and Double Up) and not GPP (tournaments, multi-player) contests. My Week 3 lineups should work in both formats.
Week 3 Top Plays
This will be my top plays of the week. These are players who I will try to have in as many lineups of mine as possible. If I can, I will use all three in one lineup. A reminder for cash games: going with an elite quarterback is typically recommended. If you opt for a value quarterback he MUST meet value for your loaded lineup to be worth it.
QB: Andrew Luck, Indianapolis vs. San Diego ($8,700 FanDuel/$7,600 DraftKings)
Luck is facing a defense allowing 235 yards passing and at least one TD pass per game. Luck had an off week, but to be fair it was in Denver against the defending Super Bowl champions and arguably the league’s stingiest defense. He will surely be looking to rebound at home against a Chargers team that has been playing well offensively. Look for a potential shootout in Lucas Oil Stadium and big things from Mr. Luck this week.
RB: DeAngelo Williams, Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia ($8,800 FanDuel/$7,500 DraftKings)
The Eagles have a surprisingly sound offense so far this season, but their defense has been allowing a whopping 144 yards a game on the ground along with 70-plus receiving yards to running backs. Sounds like another fantastic opportunity for Williams to me. Pay the price and sit back and enjoy Williams playing as if this was the last game of his life. (Le’Veon Bell is set to return in Week 4.)
WR: See Value play below
TE: Greg Olsen, Carolina vs. Minnesota ($7,800 FanDuel/$5,800 DraftKings)
There is no doubt that the Vikings have a formidable defense. They also have some of the best young and fast linebackers in the game today. However the Panthers will be their most challenging matchup yet, and the odds that Minnesota can shut down Cam Newton connecting with Olsen every time Carolina gets in the red zone or elsewhere on the field is pretty slim. I love Olsen this week, but as a Vikes fan hope I am dead wrong.
Value Play of the Week
Jarvis Landry, WR, Miami vs. Cleveland ($7,000 FanDuel/$6,600 DraftKings)
Landry and the Dolphins have as positive of a matchup as you can get this week. I know it seems like I am picking on the Browns this season, but that’s because I am! (And I’m not alone.) Landry is a volume receiver and Ryan Tannehill has been playing very well to start the season. Toss in the fact the Browns have a third-string, rookie quarterback playing this week and you are looking at more offensive possessions in Week 3 for the Fins. Landry is sure to be a beneficiary.
The Lineup (s)
This week the GPP FanDuel lineup was built with a little help from my friends over at dailyfantasycafe.com. Each week I will create a FanDuel lineup using their quick and easy customizable lineup optimizer tool. I will continue to make my own, but who is going to complain about options right?
Try the optimizer yourself. Careful though. You may get hooked!
