A quarterback's jump from year one to two is supposed to be significant. Look at guys like Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow, for example. Can Mac Jones do something similar?
Jones is entering his second year in the NFL after leading the Patriots to the playoffs last year. However, he's now under a microscope ahead of the 2022 season.
Unfortunately, initial reports out of training camp aren't exactly encouraging. Jones and the Patriots offense is reportedly struggling. The former Alabama doesn't have a good feel for the offense yet.
"Mac Jones had some moments of uncertainty a yr ago in training camp but not nearly as many as you would expect for a rook. This summer? Far more. Yes, it is early August. There's time. However, the install started back in the spring & you'd like more comfort & success. #Patriots," said Mike Giardi.
The good news is Mac Jones still has some time to figure it out. It's also plausible the Patriots offense is a work in progress throughout the 2022 season.
At the same time, you don't want to spend too much time in training camp sorting through what works and what doesn't. Instead, you'd like to have that nailed down by now.
It's going to be an interesting season in New England. Hopefully Jones takes a big step forward.
