NFL Insider Suggests Major Quarterback Controversy Could Take Place In New England

A major quarterback controversy could soon take place in New England.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport told Pat McAfee this Thursday morning that Mac Jones is still the starter, but another promising performance from Bailey Zappe this weekend could spark a controversy.

Bill Belichick has never been afraid to play the best player. And Jones hasn't exactly cemented his status as the franchise's quarterback.

Another strong performance from Zappe could be all Belichick needs to see to bench Jones.

"I think Mac Jone is the starter but if Bailey Zappe looks really good & wins this week.. it's gonna get interesting in New England," said Rapoport.

Last Sunday in his first-ever NFL start, Bailey Zappe completed 81 percent of his throws for 188 yards and one touchdown with one pick. The Patriots beat the Lions of Detroit 29-0.

Mac Jones, meanwhile, is off to a turnover-prone start to the 2022 season. He has 786 yards through the air with just two touchdowns and a whopping five interceptions.

Zappe could become the Pats' new starting quarterback if he plays well on Sunday.
