Week 1 of the NFL preseason continues with a pair games on Friday, Aug. 9. There were 11 games on Thursday night as the countdown to Week 1 of the regular season is officially on. There are just two on tap for Friday night, but one of those will be televised nationally on NFL Network.
So if you're wondering, "What football games are on today?" know this: There are two scheduled for Friday, Aug. 9.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Pittsburgh Steelers
7:30 p.m. ET on NFL Network – Heinz Field (Pittsburgh)
Pittsburgh's offense will certainly look different in the Steelers' preseason opener. For one, Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown are no longer on the roster. But also it will be Josh Dobbs not Ben Roethlisberger at the helm with Mason Rudolph also expected to lead a few series as the competition to be Big Ben's backup begins. For Tampa Bay, this marks the start of Bruce Arians' tenure. With Arians' background, plenty of eyes will be on quarterback Jameis Winston, but he probably will only be out there for a series or two. Also worth watching: the debut of a pair of top-10 picks in linebackers Devin White (Bucs, fifth overall) and Devin Bush (Steelers, 10th).
Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints
8 p.m. ET (check local listings) – Mercedes-Benz Superdome (New Orleans)
The Vikings and Saints are set to renew acquaintances in the Superdome, although the stakes are considerably lower than some of their more recent meetings. For the Vikings, it's a retooled offense with a new coordinator (Kevin Stefanski) and reshuffled offensive line headlined by first-round pick Garrett Bradbury at center. Just don't expect to see Kirk Cousins and Minnesota's top weapons out there for very long. Same goes for the Saints as Drew Brees will surely give way to backup Teddy Bridgewater sooner rather than later (if he even plays at all).
