NFL Scouts Talk Anonymously About AFC South Teams

Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts

No team has won the AFC South three straight seasons since the Indianapolis Colts won from 2003 to '07. The Tennessee Titans have a chance to break that drought, although they aren't the favorites to take the crown this season. With a new quarterback in Indy and a pair of second-year quarterbacks, this has the makings of one of the NFL's more intriguing divisions. Could the Houston Texans or Jacksonville Jaguars take a leap forward under their third head coaches in as many years? Will multiple teams make the playoffs? There's plenty to discuss in the AFC South.

In order to get an accurate assessment of the AFC South heading into 2022, Athlon asked NFL scouts to talk anonymously about the Texans, Colts, Jaguars, and Titans.

Houston Texans

"Nick Caserio is doing a nice job fixing the mess that Bill O'Brien left him. I thought he had a nice draft, especially Derek Stingley Jr., Christian Harris and Jalen Pitre. This defense just got faster."

"Davis Mills has a strong arm and is a lot more mobile than he gets credit for. I thought he was the second-best rookie quarterback behind Mac Jones last season. He's got a real shot to be their QB1 this year and beyond."

"Brandin Cooks is as fast, very fast, in the fourth quarter as he is in the first quarter."

"I thought getting John Metchie III for the future, even though he's coming off a knee injury, was a smart move."

"Laremy Tunsil is one of the best pass blockers in the game."

"Justin Britt rhymes with grit."

"Tytus Howard is a natural right tackle. He is NOT a guard."

"Kenyon Green should be plug-and-play at left guard."

"Pharaoh Brown has to cut down on the penalties, but he has some ability."

"Brevin Jordan is like having an extra wide receiver."

"I don't know how much I-formation stuff they'll use, but Andy Janovich is a good lead blocker."

"Jonathan Greenard is their best pass rusher. He's got a great long-arm move."

"Maliek Collins' spin move is tough to stop."

"Roy Lopez was stout as a rookie, liked what he did last year."

"Kamu Grugier-Hill is one of the best off-the-ball guys in the division."

"Steven Nelson flies under the radar, but he can play."

"Derek Stingley Jr. is a shutdown corner from Day 1."

"Jalen Pitre should make up for losing Justin Reid."

"Desmond King is better as a nickel than outside."

Indianapolis Colts

"Quenton Nelson is their second-best offensive player. He's a total mauler, and he keeps getting better."

"Jonathan Taylor could wind up wearing a gold jacket one day if he keeps this up. He's got it all."

"Matt Ryan gives them a steady personality and a consistent quarterback. They really lacked that with Carson Wentz. It was pretty glaring how Jim Irsay talked about him. It's the epitome of 'Good riddance!' They felt that strongly."

"Left tackle is still a problem they haven't really solved since Anthony Castonzo retired."

"Not loving their wide receiver situation. They've got to hope that Alec Pierce changes the conversation outside."

"Nyheim Hines is a Swiss army knife."

"Shaquille Leonard — they don't call him 'The Maniac' for nothing. That guy finds the football in a bad mood."

"DeForest Buckner is as disruptive as it gets inside."

"Really like them picking up Yannick Ngakoue; he's an outstanding pass rusher. You wish the guy was better against the run, but he can go off the edge."

"Kwity Paye has a lot of upside."

"Bobby Okereke takes excellent pursuit angles."

"Signing Stephon Gilmore takes this defense up a big notch. I know some people around the league worry he's lost a step, but I think he just needed time to get fully healthy again."

"Kenny Moore II doesn't miss much, ever. He's got great instincts and breaks on the ball super fast"

Jacksonville Jaguars

"Trevor Lawrence still has a shot to be as good as they thought he was when they drafted him with the first pick."

"I thought the Urban Meyer deal overshadowed everything they were trying to build."

"The spending they've done at receiver should give them a real boost. Christian Kirk and Zay Jones are upgrades."

"I thought they overpaid for Cam Robinson."

"Laviska Shenault Jr. has been a disappointment so far."

"Brandon Scherff was another overpay, but they've got the cap room."

"Not many people wanted to work with Trent Baalke, but hearing he's getting along well so far with Doug Pederson."

"Getting Travis Etienne Jr. back makes them a better football team."

"I thought Meyer was the biggest issue with James Robinson last season. He can play."

"Devin Lloyd is one of the better young linebackers to enter the league in a long time."

"Roy Robertson-Harris is a good pass rusher with a nice repertoire of moves. Same thing with Josh Allen."

"Travon Walker is a bit raw, but he has every athletic trait."

"I thought Foye Oluokun was a good signing."

"They really needed the Darious Williams signing. I'm not sold on their secondary at all, but Shaquill Griffin is solid."

Tennessee Titans

"Ryan Tannehill is at a crossroads after bombing in the playoffs. They have to figure out if he's going to be the guy for just this year or if they're going to get Malik Willis ready. I can't see Willis being ready to go this year, but you never know until he gets on the field."

"Losing A.J. Brown and swapping him out for Treylon Burks, that's an L. I can see moving on when you don't think you can sign the guy, though."

"Taylor Lewan is really tough."

"Having Austin Hooper gives Tannehill a really reliable target."

"Nobody, I mean nobody wants to tackle Derrick Henry. That makes up for a lot of Tannehill's streakiness."

"I like all of their running backs. Hassan Haskins scored five touchdowns against Ohio State. Dontrell Hilliard gave them a nice change of pace when Henry was hurt last year."

"Re-signing Harold Landry III was a key move. He earned it."

"Jeffery Simmons is a monster. Can't single-block him."

"Bud Dupree, healthy, plus Landry and Simmons, that's a wrecking crew."

"Zach Cunningham looks a lot happier and more comfortable now that he's out of Houston."

"Kevin Byard is the real deal."

"If they get a full season out of Caleb Farley, they've got one corner spot locked down."

"I could see Roger McCreary getting on the field and playing a lot as a rookie."
