NFL Scouts Talk Anonymously About NFC East Teams

Start 'em, Sit 'em Week 2: Dak Prescott

Does a healthy Dak Prescott make the Cowboys the team to beat in the NFC East?

The entire NFC East is hoping to rebound from a tough 2020 season. All four teams posted losing records wtih Washington's 7-9 showing good enough to win the division. Injuries played a big part as Dak Prescott and Saquon Barkley both missed the majority of the season and Dallas and the New York Giants are both hoping their healthy returns will give them a boost. Philadelphia is rebooting somewhat with rookie head coach Nick Sirianni taking over and Jalen Hurts now the starting quarterback after Carson Wentz was traded to Indianapolis

In order to get an accurate assessment of the NFC South heading into 2021, Athlon asked NFL scouts to talk anonymously about the Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, and Washington Football Team.

Dallas Cowboys

"They’ve got a ton of skill-position talent all over the field. I mean, they’re loaded at quarterback, running back and wide receiver. I’m comfortable with their offensive tackles. The interior line is a little bit of a question mark. The biggest concern is if Dak Prescott isn’t healthy and doesn’t get back to his old form, then they’re in trouble because they’ve got nobody else there."

"Ezekiel Elliott is twitchy and explosive. Once he identifies where he’s going, he attacks the hole and hits it hard. To be that thickly built, he’s slippery and powerful. Amari Cooper is a solid player, but I don’t think he’s special. CeeDee Lamb is a unique, natural receiver. Michael Gallup is just a really good football player."

"Defensively, yes, there’s a lot of talent, but there’s also a lot of untapped potential. DeMarcus Lawrence has to get back to where he was as a player. Neville Gallimore still has a lot to prove*. Randy Gregory is a freak of nature as a talent, but he’s never gotten it done consistently. With Jaylon Smith, Leighton Vander Esch and Micah Parsons, they have three high-level linebackers."

*Note: Neville Gallimore dislocated his left elbow in Dallas' first preseason game and is expected to miss the start of the season.

"Their secondary could have some problems. The corner they drafted in the second round, Kelvin Joseph, is going to need to play right away. They don’t have much in terms of quality performers. Defensively, it’s going to be another challenging year, and that could hold them back in this division significantly."

New York Giants

"Joe Judge and Dave Gettleman seem to be adding talent, drafting well, identifying needs and not reaching for players who aren’t worth it. All of that said, I think they’re still a work in progress."

"That offensive line has a lot of guys who have to prove themselves. Andrew Thomas showed me he’s definitely a high-end player. Will Hernandez is going to be a really good player. Zach Fulton is a journeyman, but he’s a tough, competitive kid."

"Kenny Golladay is a weapon, and they gave him huge money. Sterling Shepard is a nice player. Kadarius Toney is a freak show. I would bet he’ll be their biggest playmaker."

"If Saquon Barkley is healthy, we all know he’s an elite guy."

"There are some questions about Daniel Jones, including holding the ball too long, but he’s made some strides. I hear a lot of good things about his character and intangibles."

"Defensively, I like Leonard Williams a lot. He finally showed what everyone thought he was going to be. With him and Dexter Lawrence II, they’ve got two good defensive ends. The linebackers are just decent. The kid from Georgia (Azeez Ojulari) can run. He’s very athletic."

"I like their secondary. James Bradberry had a very good year. Jabrill Peppers is never going to be elite, but he’s solid. Logan Ryan is a veteran guy that you can count on. I like them adding Adoree’ Jackson; that’s a good move."

"I don’t think they’re going to win the division, but I see them being in the running for a wild card spot."

Philadelphia Eagles

"They’re one of the most interesting teams this year, even though there’s not much hype surrounding them. Yes, they traded Carson Wentz, but they do they have the talent to be a productive team. They’re focused on adding playmakers like DeVonta Smith. That kid is electric."

"Their offensive line is getting a little long in the tooth. As a group, they didn’t play well last year. They need to play significantly better for this team to have a chance to win."

"They’re taking a huge gamble putting everything on the line with Jalen Hurts and not bringing in anyone to compete with him. It’s a guess on their part that he can be the guy. If you have to put Joe Flacco behind that line, that will create a very bad spot for them."

"When you look at the names on defense, they should be elite, but they were up-and-down last year. Fletcher Cox is an elite guy. Brandon Graham is a very good football player. Linebacker is one of my big concerns on this team."

"I love Darius Slay at cornerback. He’s a really good football player, but overall, I have concerns about their secondary and worry if they can hold up on the back end."

Washington Football Team

"Ron Rivera is one of the best coaches in the league. I’m a big believer in him. I love their skill guys, Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel."

"The big question for me is how good is their offensive line going to be? Geron Christian Sr. and Sam Cosmi at left tackle had me nervous before they signed Charles Leno Jr. Ereck Flowers is an okay guard, and Morgan Moses is solid. Brandon Scherff is obviously their best guy. One thing they do have is toughness and competitiveness."

"Logan Thomas has made big strides at tight end."

"Antonio Gibson is a really good player, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Lamar Miller has a lot of production as the backup."

"Ryan Fitzpatrick can open up their offense. If you’re going to have a questionable offensive line, then Fitzpatrick is the guy you want. He’s smart. He gets the ball out. He’s so on top of it mentally, but that doesn’t mean he won’t turn the ball over."

"Defensively, this team is a bear. Chase Young, that whole defensive line is ridiculously big, powerful and athletic. They control the line of scrimmage."

"Jon Bostic is a tough overachiever. Jamin Davis can run. He adds a lot of speed."

"I like their secondary, Kendall Fuller, William Jackson III, those are good athletes. Landon Collins can’t cover that great, but he’s good at everything else."

"If Fitzpatrick plays solid, they should be the front-runner to win that division."
