NFL Scouts Talk Anonymously About NFC East Teams

Dak Prescott

What do rival scouts think of the Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, and Commanders?

It's been almost two decades since a team has repeated as NFC East champions — all the way back to the Eagles winning from 2001 to '04. That's made for quite a dramatic playoff race each year, even if none of the teams are very good. But the 2022 NFL season brings several potential playoff teams, as each of the teams made significant upgrades. The Eagles traded for A.J. Brown on draft day, and the Commanders have a new quarterback to go with their new name. Even the Giants have a new look under a first-time head coach-GM combination. But can any of them compete with the Cowboys?

Dallas Cowboys

"Dak Prescott is coming off an epic season, really justifying their hefty investment in him."

"I don't think they're going to really miss Amari Cooper that much. His play has declined. The trade was the right thing."

"CeeDee Lamb has star qualities."

"Getting Michael Gallup back was a smart move."

"I thought they needed to move on from La'el Collins. They just couldn't count on him anymore."

"Tyron Smith and Zack Martin just keep going strong. That's real staying power."

"Ezekiel Elliott barely cracked 1,000 yards last season. For what they're paying him, you would hope for more production."

"At tight end, they're in good hands with Dalton Schultz. He deserves a new contract."

"Trevon Diggs is special. I mean, you don't pick off 11 passes without great ball skills and hands."

"Micah Parsons is so twitchy and versatile. I like what he does rushing off the edge and as an off-the-ball linebacker."

"DeMarcus Lawrence, if they get a full season out of him, is outstanding."

"I thought Dorance Armstrong started to recapture his old college form last season as a pass rusher."

"I like Jayron Kearse and how he gets to the football. He's a great tackler."

New York Giants

"Not picking up the fifth-year option for Daniel Jones was logical. There's no way they want to get in a Sam Darnold-type of financial commitment when they're not totally sold on the quarterback."

"Tyrod Taylor is a very reliable backup."

"The Kenny Golladay signing, not looking so hot."

"Kadarius Toney has a lot of growing up to do."

"I thought they had a nice draft. Picking up Evan Neal and Kayvon Thibodeaux gives them some real building blocks on both sides of the football. We had a high grade on Neal. He is going to play in the NFL for a long time. Thibodeaux, there was no real legitimate reason for him to slide. I don't understand people dinging him. He can rush the passer as well as anyone in this draft."

"Andrew Thomas is very talented."

"Bottom line: Saquon Barkley hasn't lived up to a considerable amount of hype."

"Blake Martinez, I like the way he finds the football, like his tackling."

"Azeez Ojulari is about as fast as anyone in the league coming off the edge."

"Leonard Williams has been one of the few Dave Gettleman moves that has worked out."

"Dexter Lawrence II is a gigantic presence at the line of scrimmage."

"They finally moved on from James Bradberry, cutting him to free up some salary cap space."

"I'm not entirely comfortable with their cornerback situation."

"Xavier McKinney is a complete safety. He gets the job done in every way."

Philadelphia Eagles

"Jalen Hurts is right on the edge of being a legitimate quarterback. I'm just not sure if he's going to be in the very good category and never get to great. I like his leadership and his feet, just not the most accurate deep-ball guy and arm isn't that strong."

"DeVonta Smith does everything smooth. He's a real challenge for DBs."

"By trading for A.J. Brown, the Eagles have someone who can compete for contested catches and can get deep. This makes up for missing on Jalen Reagor, who shouldn't be on the team much longer."

"Miles Sanders is a good running back, does everything well, just needs to be healthier."

"Haven't seen a lineman as big as Jordan Mailata since Jonathan Ogden was playing for the Ravens."

"One more year for Jason Kelce. He's one of the smartest centers I've ever watched."

"Lane Johnson hasn't lost much, if anything. He's a powerful man."

"Dallas Goedert is thriving."

"They need to keep Kenneth Gainwell involved."

"Jonathan Gannon is starting to get the kind of linebackers he needs to run the 4-3. By signing Kyzir White, they've got an athletic Will linebacker."

"Fletcher Cox is showing signs of slowing down."

"Javon Hargrave and Josh Sweat are an excellent pass-rushing tandem. Now that they've got Haason Reddick on the defense, they've got three serious pass rushers."

"Darius Slay is tough in one-on-one coverage situations. He's one of the best corners in the league."

"The safeties aren't bad, but they don't make enough big plays."

Washington Commanders

"I just don't see Carson Wentz having a renaissance for his career after failing in Indianapolis and Philadelphia. He has to change his ways and stop being a go-for-glory guy and just take what the defense gives him."

"The good news is that Wentz has a lot of really good players around him."

"Terry McLaurin is a real No. 1 wide receiver. He's great after the catch and is just so darn competitive."

"Drafting Jahan Dotson gives them some speed outside to go with Curtis Samuel in the slot."

"There isn't a more versatile tandem in the backfield than Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic, and Brian Robinson Jr. is a good, physical back who should contribute as a rookie."

"This is a pretty solid offensive line. I thought that signing Trai Turner for a low price was a good move."

"They aren't scaring anyone at the tight end position."

"Taylor Heinicke is a very good backup."

"The strength of this team is the defensive line. They've drafted exceptionally well at that position with Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen and, now, Phidarian Mathis. That's a wrecking crew."

"The linebackers are just OK, not special."

"Bobby McCain is the most productive guy they've got in the secondary."

"William Jackson III can play, but he gets hurt way too much."
