It’s Week 17 of the NFL regular season and while many teams are simply playing out the string there are still two playoff spots available and seeding in both conferences to be determined.
In the AFC, Tennessee is in the driver’s seat for the second wild-card spot with Pittsburgh right behind and Oakland still in the running. The Titans will be in Houston to face a Texans team that already knows it will be hosting during Wild Card Weekend. The Steelers are in Baltimore to face a Ravens team that will be resting several starters, including MVP front-runner Lamar Jackson, with the top seed already locked up. The Raiders are in Denver to face the Broncos. If the Titans win, they’re in. If Tennessee loses and Pittsburgh wins, the Steelers sneak in. Oakland’s scenarios are more complicated but the Raiders still have a shot if everything goes their way.
In the NFC, the only remaining playoff spot left to claim belongs to the NFC East champ. Philadelphia takes the division with a road win over the Giants but a stumble by the Eagles opens the door for Dallas, who hosts Washington. The final game of the regular season also will determine who wins the NFC West as Seattle hosts San Francisco for “Sunday Night Football.” More importantly, the winner could end up with one of the top two seeds and a first-round bye while the loser will host during next weekend’s Wild Card Round.
The rest of the bracket in both conferences is still up in the air as well. Baltimore has sewed up the No. 1 seed in the AFC with the 49ers and Packers (at Lions) in the driver’s seat for the top two spots in the NFC, but the Saints (at Panthers) and Seahawks aren’t out of the running either.
Elsewhere on the schedule are teams angling for draft positioning with some coaches likely to be out of a job by next week while some players will be auditioning for their next team.
