Seemingly every week, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes amazes NFL fans with a ridiculous throw or two.
The former league MVP would likely be most people's choice for the greatest arm talent in football.
But Mahomes himself might nominate another quarterback for that distinction: the one he'll face on Sunday Night Football.
Mahomes had high praise for Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on Wednesday, saying he can make throws no one else in the NFL can replicate.
"Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: Justin Herbert is a special talent, he throws passes I don’t think anyone else can throw in this league including me." -- Rob Collins
Herbert, in his third NFL season, has often been compared to Mahomes, as the two have re-written the record books for passing production in their first few seasons as starters.
But while Mahomes is currently the betting favorite to win the MVP award, Herbert has had a down season, at least by his lofty standards. Through nine games, he's averaging 272.2 passing yards per game and has thrown 14 touchdowns. A season ago, Herbert averaged nearly 295 yards per game through the air and threw 38 scores.
A lot of that has had to do with injury, both to Herbert and the playmakers around him. Herbert fractured rib cartilage during the Chargers' first meeting with the Chiefs this season, a Week Two loss. He's also been without his top two wide receivers, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, in recent games.
Still, Herbert, like Mahomes, shows flashes of his talent seemingly every week, like this gem of a touchdown pass last Sunday night.
Mahomes' comment will likely inspire debate from fans about which quarterback is more talented. They will look to settle that on the field in prime time this week.
