Patriots release Anderson, two other veterans

Foxboro, MA ( - The New England Patriots released veteran linebacker James Anderson on Monday, just a few months after bringing him into the fold.

Anderson started all 16 games for the Bears last year, recording 102 tackles and four sacks. The 30-year-old Anderson played for the Panthers from 2006 to 2012 before signing with Chicago.

New England also cut ties with defensive linemen Tommy Kelly and Will Smith, along with rookie tight end Justin Jones.

Kelly spent last season with the Pats, his 10th pro campaign, picking up 22 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks in just five contests while hampered by a knee injury.

Smith's 2013 campaign never got off the ground, having suffered a knee injury in training camp which landed him on injured reserve. The 33-year-old played with the Saints from 2004-2013 before joining the Patriots in May.
