Here we are at the midway point of the 2017 NFL regular season and it’s safe to say there have been quite a few surprises across the league. While teams such as New England, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and even Kansas City being in or tied for first in their respective divisions was largely expected, the presence of Philadelphia, Minnesota, New Orleans, Jacksonville, and the Los Angeles Rams in the same position was not.
The fact that nearly half of the teams (14) are at, one game above or one game below .500 speaks volumes for the parity that’s present this season, while the struggles of the likes of Denver, Indianapolis, Tampa Bay, the New York Giants, Cleveland and San Francisco tell a different story. Then again, the Browns’ and 49ers’ records (both are winless) are not that much of a surprise and neither is the Colts’ (3-6) considering Andrew Luck won’t play a single game this season.
There are still plenty of games, however and it starts with Week 10. Four teams are on bye, including a pair of division leaders in the Eagles (NFL-best 7-1) and Chiefs (6-3). As for those teams that will be playing, the slate kicks off in Glendale, Arizona, on Thursday night with Seattle taking on Arizona. The only other divisional matchup finds Green Bay a rare underdog headed into its game against Chicago. Cleveland (at Detroit) and San Francisco (vs. Giants) both get another shot at picking up their first win of the season, with the 49ers seemingly in better position to do so given New York’s own issues.
Other intriguing pairings find Dallas in Atlanta as the Falcons are trying to turn things around after dropping four of their past five games to fall to .500. And New England and Denver are set to renew their unique rivalry, although this season has the two teams going in opposite directions. The Patriots are coming off of their bye at 6-2 as their defense seems to have figured out its early-season struggles, while the Broncos are reeling, having lost four in a row and desperately searching for answers on offense.
