Six teams are on bye once again in Week 9, but that doesn’t mean the smaller slate of NFL games lacks in terms of intrigue. Almost half of the 13 games are divisional matchups and the two cross-conference pairings could be the most interesting games of the weekend.
Week 9 is bookended by a pair of divisional contests with Buffalo and the New York Jets getting things started on Thursday night and Detroit vs. Green Bay wrapping the action up on Monday night. The Bills have an opportunity to draw even with New England (on bye) for first place in the AFC East, while the Lions and Packers are looking to snap losing streaks in hopes of closing the gap on the Vikings (also on bye).
Elsewhere, a pair of NFC South matchups gives New Orleans a chance to extend its winning streak to six by beating reeling Tampa Bay at home, while Atlanta will be in Carolina with each team trying to keep pace with the Saints.
But perhaps the two most intriguing games on the slate are Denver vs. Philadelphia and Kansas City vs. Dallas. The Eagles have the best record in the NFL (7-1) and have won six in a row whereas the Broncos have dropped three straight and are searching for answers on offense. Denver’s offense has been pretty solid even during the losing streak, but can it slow down Carson Wentz and Philadelphia’s offense, which just added Miami running back Jay Ajayi via a trade on Tuesday?
Meanwhile the Chiefs head to Dallas to face the Cowboys, who may be without running back Ezekiel Elliott following a federal judge’s ruling that denied the NFL Players Association’s request for a preliminary injunction of the six-game suspension handed down by Roger Goodell before the season started. Barring another appeal, Elliott’s suspension will become effective immediately; meaning Alfred Morris and Darren McFadden will try and fill his big shoes in the backfield against the Chiefs, who at 6-2 are tied with the Patriots and Steelers for the best record in the AFC.
