Pressure Mounts for NFL Team to Dismiss Head Coach Despite Win on Sunday
Coming off a brutal upset loss to the Atlanta Falcons, the Philadelphia Eagles had a lot to prove coming into their game against the New Orleans Saints in Week 3. The Eagles had two primary concerns after the Falcons game: their defense, and their play calling.
Going into Week 3, the Eagles had allowed the most yards per carry by any team in the league with 7.8, which was a huge concern as they were set to face one of the league's best backs in Alvin Kamara. The Saints were also the No. 1 offense coming into the game, averaging 45.5 points per game through the first two weeks.
Defense would turn out to be the Eagles' strong suit against the Saints, holding New Orleans to just 12 points.
However, despite the win, play calling was still an issue for Philadelphia, especially two of head coach Nick Sirianni's decisions to go for it on fourth down.
The Eagles trailed 12-7 with two minutes left in the game. Had Sirianni taken the field goals earlier, Philadelphia wouldn't have been in that position. His first such opportunity came late in the first half, when the Eagles went for a fourth-and-1 at the Saints' 15, and could not convert on a run from Saquon Barkley.
Sirianni also passed on a 51-year field-goal attempt early in the third quarter, instead trying to convert a fourth-and-3 play. But Jalen Hurts was sacked for a turnover on downs.
Those decisions came after a similar missed opportunity against Atlanta six days earlier, which eventually cost them the game. Because of this pattern of poor decision-making, many fans made up their minds.
"Nick Sirianni still needs to be fired," one fan said on X (formerly Twitter), with another adding, "Nick Sirianni HAS to be fired tonight."
A particularly harsh fan said, "Nick Sirianni with one of the finest efforts in NFL history today to try and get fired before making it to the locker room post game."
One fan even added that "Nick Sirianni should have been fired last year."
Despite the exciting victory in New Orleans, it's clear that some fans want Sirianni gone. He's brought them to a Super Bowl, but the Eagles are now back in a funk.
