Rams Coach Explains Why He's Trying To Trade Cam Akers

Running Back Rankings Week 16: Cam Akers

If your favorite NFL team needs a running back, the Los Angeles Rams might be calling.

After questions circulated this past week surrounding the absence of Rams' running back Cam Akers in Week 6, head coach Sean McVay told the media today that the Rams are exploring ways to give Akers a "fresh start" with a new team.

"Rams’ Sean McVay said the team has explored the option of finding running back Cam Akers 'a fresh new start with another team, via @sarahbarshop," Adam Schefter reported Monday afternoon.

Akers, who missed Los Angeles' Week 6 victory over the Carolina Panthers due to personal reasons, is in his 3rd NFL season with the Rams.

After a promising rookie campaign in 2020, Akers tore his achilles before the 2021 season and looked to be out for the entire year. However, after a miraculous and nearly unprecedented recovery, Akers returned to action in Week 17 and even started three of the four postseason games for Los Angeles.

This season, though, has not gone to plan for for the former 2nd round pick out of Florida State. Akers is averaging just 3 yards per carry on 51 rushing attempts in 2022.

Whether the Rams end up moving Akers is uncertain, but if he does become available, a team in search of a running back may decide to give him another chance.
