Report: Former Bears WR Hurd sentenced to 15 years in prison

Lake Forest, IL ( - A federal judge reportedly sentenced former Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd to 15 years in prison on a drug- trafficking conviction.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the 28-year-old Hurd pleaded guilty in April to conspiring to possess and distribute marijuana and cocaine. Hurd had been held in prison since then after a judge revoked his bond more than a year ago.

Hurd was originally arrested in December 2011 after purchasing a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover officer, and had told the officer that he wanted up to 10 kilograms and a half ton of marijuana per week for distribution in the Chicago area.

Hurd, who spent the first five years of his career with the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Bears as a free agent in 2011, faced a minimum of 10 years in prison under federal law with a possible maximum life sentence.
