The San Francisco 49ers are reshuffling their practice squad following a 28-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6.
In a move announced today by the team, the 49ers signed quarterback Kurt Benkert and corner Ka'Dar Hollman to the practice squad, releasing linebacker Buddy Smith and kicker Sam Sloman.
"The #49ers have signed QB Kurt Benkert and CB Ka’dar Hollman to the team’s practice squad. In order to make room on the practice squad, the team has released LB Buddy Johnson and K Sam Sloman," the 49ers announced Tuesday.
Adding Benkert to the practice squad means the 49ers now have two quarterbacks to back up starter Jimmy Garoppolo, if needed.
The other quarterback, Brock Purdy, was a 2022 7th-round selection for the 49ers and currently serves as the direct backup to Garoppolo on the 53-man roster.
If San Francisco doesn't open an active roster spot for Benkert, he'll likely stay on the practice squad until or unless one of the other 49ers quarterbacks underperforms or suffers an injury.
