Tampa Bay will be without a key defensive piece for the next several weeks.
After injuring his foot in the Buccaneers' Week 4 loss to Kansas City, Ian Rapoport announced today via twitter that defensive back Logan Ryan is scheduled for surgery tomorrow and anticipates the corner/safety ending up on injured reserve.
"#Bucs standout DB Logan Ryan is scheduled for surgery tomorrow to repair a Jones fracture in his foot, with Dr. Martin O'Malley performing it, sources say. He’s headed for Injured Reserve with plans to be back late in the season and the playoffs," Rapoport reported today.
While Ryan wasn't an every down starter for Tampa Bay, he has played over half of the Buccaneers defensive snaps in games he's been active.
Tampa Bay, who ranks 5th best in the NFL in points allowed per game (17.2), will certainly continue to miss Ryan's positional versatility over the next few weeks.
However, the Buccaneers defense should have a chance to continue their positive play in Week 7, as even without Ryan in the fold, they take on a Panthers' offense ranking dead last in the NFL in terms of yards per game (260).
