Florida Makes Mike Evans Announcement Before Buccaneers-Commanders Playoff Game

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for their Wild Card round matchup with the Washington Commanders. And ahead of the game, star wide receiver Mike Evans earned a huge honor from the state of Florida in response to his latest dominant campaign for the Bucs.

In his 11th season in the NFL, all with Tampa Bay, Evans tied a record set by Jerry Rice by posting his 11th straight season of at least 1,000 receiving yards. He did so in spectacular fashion, as he hauled in an eight-yard reception on the Buccaneers final play of the regular season to reach the mark.

Evans' consistent greatness for Tampa has not gone unnoticed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. On Friday, it led to a surprising announcement from DeSantis, as he revealed that Jan. 10 was officially Mike Evans Day in the state of Florida to commemorate his contributions to the Buccaneers franchise.

"Today, Florida celebrates Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Bucs for his Hall of Fame-worthy achievements in football, making countless memories for fans across the Sunshine State and the entire country. We also recognize his commitment to helping others and giving back to the Tampa Bay community throughout his eleven seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This January 10th is officially Mike Evans Day in Florida!" DeSantis said in an announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Evans has accomplished a lot during his career with the Buccaneers, but this may be his most unique achievement yet. The star pass catcher has been immortalized in the state of Florida, as he will forever have a day for himself in January thanks to this move from DeSantis.

And yet, while this honor certainly means a lot to Evans, his main goal will be to help the Buccaneers win a Super Bowl this year. They will set out on their quest to do just that when they take on the Commanders on Sunday, Jan. 12, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m. EST.
