By the numbers: Titans after Week 3
A look at some of the Tennessee Titans’ notable numbers through Week 3 of the 2019 season:
3 – first-quarter points, tied with five others for the fewest in the league. The other five include this week’s opponent, Atlanta, which is second in the league for fourth-quarter scoring at 11.0 points per game. The last time the Titans scored a first-quarter touchdown was in Week 16 last season, a 25-16 victory over Washington that started with Derrick Henry’s 1-yard touchdown run with 5:37 to go in the first quarter.
3 – straight games in which Brett Kern has had at least one punt of 60-plus yards. It is the longest such streak of his career and includes a long of 70 yards in Week 1, 61 yards in Week 2 and 63 yards in Week 3. This already is the fifth of his eight seasons in Tennessee that includes at least one punt of 70 yards or more. Kern is tied for 11in the NFL with an average of 46.9 yards per punt, which is on pace to be the third highest figure of his career.
4 – pass completions of 40 yards or more by quarterback Marcus Mariota (pictured), which is tied with four others for second in the league. The only one with more is Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes (eight). Those throws have gone to three different receivers, A.J. Brown (51, 47), Henry (75) and Tajae Sharpe (47). Last season Mariota finished with five completions of 40 yards or more on 331 attempts.
5 – fumbles, only one of which the opposition recovered. Only four teams (Minnesota, Carolina, Cincinnati and N.Y. Giants) have put the ball on the ground more often – but all lost more than one. Cincinnati leads the NFL with five lost fumbles. Carolina and the Giants are tied for second with four. Among the Titans, Mariota has fumbled twice while Henry, Adoreé Jackson and Corey Davis have done so once each. Jackson’s was on the only one recovered by the other team (Jacksonville).
5 – touchdowns in five goal-to-go situations, including at least one in each of the first three games. The Titans are one of five teams with a 100 percent success rate on goal-to-go situations having gotten to the end zone twice each against Cleveland and Indianapolis and once against Jacksonville. In 2018, they had just five goal-to-go situations in the first six games (they converted four) and finished the season 21in the NFL with a 73.1 percent success rate.
6 – touchdowns by Titans’ opponents on seven possessions that reached the red zone (inside the 20). The seven opportunities are among the NFL’s fewest (only New England, Green Bay, Chicago and the L.A. Chargers have allowed fewer) but with an 85.7 percent conversion rate allowed, Tennessee’s defense is tied for next-to-last, with Denver, when it comes to stopping other teams when they get that close.
10 – first-down receptions by tight end Delanie Walker, which makes him one of six tight ends and one of 32 players overall with 10 or more. Walker has 16 receptions total, which means 62.5 percent of his catches have moved the chains. In 2017, his most recent full season, he had 43 first-down receptions among his 74 total catches (58.1 percent).
15 – more points scored (67) than allowed (52) through the first three games. That is the best point differential of any team with a losing record. In fact, the Titans are the only AFC team and one of two overall (Carolina at 1-2 is plus-9) that is on the plus side of point differential yet has a losing record.
26 – times Mariota has been hit while attempting to pass (he has been sacked 17 times and contacted nine others). The only team that has allowed more hits on its quarterbacks is the Miami Dolphins, which has used two (Ryan Fitzpatrick, Josh Rosen), neither of who has been sacked more than seven times.
194.7 – passing yards per game. Tennessee is one seven teams currently averaging fewer than 200 yards through the air. That group includes one that is undefeated (Green Bay) as well as two that are winless (Miami, N.Y. Jets).
