Travis Kelce Speaks Out About Odell Beckham, Chiefs Rumors

Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs raised eyebrows across the NFL on Tuesday when they restructured their contract with star tight end Travis Kelce, freeing up nearly $3.5 million in cap space.

Count Kelce among those thinking that could be the precursor to a big move.

Speaking on his podcast "New Heights" with his brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, Travis said "something is in the air" and expressed his hope that the Chiefs enter the Odell Beckham Jr. sweepstakes.

"It’s a start to a move, right?" Travis Kelce said. "Like you’re freeing up cap space to be able to do something."

The Chiefs converted part of Kelce's salary into a signing bonus, which allowed him to accept the money up front rather than being paid in installments. He said the move came as a surprise to him, but he was excited about it.

"My agent just hit me up and said they want to free up some cap space," Travis Kelce explained. "So I was like, ‘I get the money now? All right, I’ll do that. And it frees up cap space for us to get better as a team? I’m in.’"

The move immediately led to speculation that the Chiefs were clearing up cap space to add a player via free agency or trade. One of the primary names mentioned has been Beckham.

Beckham, who is still recovering from a torn ACL suffered during the Super Bowl, is currently a free agent. The Rams had been considered the most likely team to re-sign him, but that's now looking less likely after Beckham tweeted last week that the Rams made him an offer that was "the lowest of low."

The Chiefs had not been a popular team associated with Beckham prior to Tuesday. And Travis Kelce admitted that he hasn't heard anything concrete about his team adding the former Pro Bowl wideout. So this could all be baseless speculation.

But he would welcome the addition if it happens.

"I want them to come true," he said of the Beckham-to-Kansas City rumors. "I haven’t heard anything. I have not heard anything in the locker room or anything around the facility. But something is in the air for sure, and if it means OBJ, all right."
