Jack Hughes Makes Emotional Post After Season-Ending Surgery
The New Jersey Devils’ season took a major turn when Jack Hughes suffered a shoulder injury during Sunday night's 2-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.
The injury occurred when Hughes was inadvertently tripped by Vegas forward Jack Eichel, his recent USA teammate at the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. Hughes crashed hard into the boards and looked to be in significant pain as he skated off the ice.
On Wednesday, the Devils announced that Hughes had been placed on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) and will miss the rest of the NHL season after having successful shoulder surgery.
"Following a review of the imaging and subsequent conversations with Jack, his family, representatives, and the Devils’ medical and athlete care staffs, it was determined that Jack would proceed with shoulder surgery," the Devils wrote in a press release.
On Thursday, the 23-year-old took to social media to share a message for all of his supporters.
Some thoughts I wanted to share. Sports/Life can break you down, can be unfair. All the preparation, sacrifice, emotion, training, toughness you put into a year can be wasted within a matter of seconds. I know I’m not the first athlete to face the challenges that comes with injuries, and I certainly will not be the last. But this is another hill to climb. The more adversity I face, the more I will believe in myself, the deeper I will dig into who I am, in the pursuit of being the best version of myself. I am excited to work towards recovery so I can continue to pour my heart and soul into the game I love. Thanks to all my family, friends, teammates for your love and support. To all the devils fans and fans of mine, thank you and I look forward to doing what I enjoy most in front of you for many years to come.
The former No. 1 overall pick has already established himself as a star in the NHL. Over six seasons, he has recorded 141 goals and 210 assists, totaling 351 points.
Hughes is a three-time NHL All-Star and was also featured as the 2025 cover athlete for EA Sports NHL, alongside his brothers—Devils defenseman Luke Hughes and Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes.
New Jersey will now look to push forward the rest of the season without him. The Devils currently have 72 points and are third in the Metropolitan Division.
