U.S. Skateboarder Going Viral After Exposing Quality Of His Bronze Medal
The men's street skateboarding final for the 2024 Paris Olympics was held on July 29, which was less than two weeks ago.
However, the medal of bronze medalist Nyjah Huston looks like it was won 29 years ago. Huston took to social media with a video that has since gone viral to show just how much wear and tear his medal has endured in the 11 days he has had it.
"All right, so these Olympic medals look great when they are brand-new," Huston said in an Instagram video. "But after letting it sit on my skin with some sweat for a little bit and then letting my friends wear it over the weekend, they are apparently not as high-quality as you would think.
"I don’t know, Olympic medals, maybe we gotta step up the quality a little bit,” Huston said.
While it's unfortunate that Huston's medal didn't keep its luster just a little over a week after he won it, a Paris Olympics spokesperson did reveal to the HuffPost that damaged ones will be replaced.
“The medals are the most coveted objects of the Games and the most precious for the athletes," the statement read. "Damaged medals will be systematically replaced by Monnaie de Paris and engraved in an identical way to the originals."
There have been quite a few complaints about the Paris Olympics, whether it be the quality of food or the sleeping arrangements, but so far, Huston is the first athlete to publicly have this issue with a medal. Huston was beaten out by Japan's Yuto Horigome, who won the gold medal on his last trick of the event, and fellow American United Jagger Eaton, who claimed the silver.
