This Day in Sports History: August 13

Recapping events that took place in the sports world on this day

The history of sports is both vast and rich, thanks to the existence of so many different ones and the longevity associated with them. With so much history to cull through, Athlon Sports wanted to offer the opportunity to look back and see what memorable things happened or milestones were reached on a specific date.

With that in mind, August 13 is a day in which an elbow injury in practice sidelined a Hall of Fame quarterback for nearly two seasons and the longest win streak in MLB history began.

1969: Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer threw a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Oakland Athletics at Memorial Stadium just four days after coming off of the disabled list.

1979: St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Lou Brock recorded his 3,000th hit in a 3-2 win over his old team, the Chicago Cubs, at Busch Stadium.

1989: Tim Richmond died of AIDS in West Palm Beach, Florida, at 34. He won 13 NASCAR Winston Cup races and finished in the top 10 78 times over his eight-year career.

1991: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana tore a tendon in his elbow throwing a 40-yard post pattern in practice. The injured elbow kept him out of football for nearly two seasons.

1995: Mickey Mantle died of metastatic liver cancer at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas at the age of 63.

2002: The Oakland Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 at Network Associates Coliseum, beginning an MLB record 20-game win streak.

2016: Michael Phelps won the gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. It was his 23rd career Olympics gold medal and 28th overall.
