Recapping events that took place in the sports world on this day
The history of sports is both vast and rich, thanks to the existence of so many different ones and the longevity associated with them. With so much history to cull through, Athlon Sports wanted to offer the opportunity to look back and see what memorable things happened or milestones were reached on a specific date.
With that in mind, August 7 is a day in which two legendary coaches first led their teams on the field and numerous baseball milestones took place.
1981: Washington Redskins kicker Mark Moseley booted three field goals in a 16-10 preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs at RFK Stadium. This was the team's first contest under new head coach Joe Gibbs.
1983: The New York Giants took the field for the first time under head coach Bill Parcells, beating the New York Jets 23-16 in a preseason game at the Meadowlands.
1987: Lynne Cox became the first person to swim from the United States to the Soviet Union, traveling in the Bering Strait from Alaska's Little Diomede Island to Russia's Big Diomede.
1999: Tampa Bay Devil Rays third baseman Wade Boggs homered for his 3,000th hit in a 15-10 win over the Cleveland Indians at Tropicana Field.
2004: Chicago Cubs pitcher Greg Maddux won his 300th game with an 8-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants at SBC Park.
2007: Former Durham County district attorney Mike Nifong formerly surrendered his law license to the North Carolina State Bar after having been fired and disbarred for withholding DNA evidence that would have acquitted Duke lacrosse players accused of rape. Nifong ultimately served jail time and was sued into bankruptcy by the players. Later that day, San Francisco Giants left fielder Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run off of Washington Nationals pitcher Mike Bacsik at AT&T Park, breaking Hank Aaron's career record.
2016: Ichiro Suzuki recorded his 3,000th hit with a triple as the Miami Marlins beat the Colorado Rockies 10-7 at Coors Field.
