This Day in Sports History: July 28

Recapping events that took place in the sports world on this day

The history of sports is both vast and rich, thanks to the existence of so many different ones and the longevity associated with them. With so much history to cull through, Athlon Sports wanted to offer the opportunity to look back and see what memorable things happened or milestones were reached on a specific date.

With that in mind, July 28 is a day in which two pitchers threw perfect games and two Australians reached new milestones.

1930: John DeWitt died suddenly on the train from his home in Greenfield, Connecticut, to his office in New York City at 48. The two-time All-American at Princeton won the silver medal at the 1904 Summer Olympics and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.

1984: The Summer Olympics began in Los Angeles. The Soviet Union boycotted the Games in response to the United States doing the same thing over the USSR's invasion of Afghanistan when they were held in Moscow four years earlier. The U.S. won the most medals with 174.

1991: Montreal Expos pitcher Dennis Martinez threw a perfect game, a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

1994: Texas Rangers pitcher Kenny Rogers completed a perfect game with a 4-0 blanking of the California Angels at The Ballpark in Arlington.

2001: Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe won six medals at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, becoming the first person to win six gold medals in one World Championship.

2018: Australian Wendy Tuck became the first female skipper to win the Clipper Round the World race yacht race.

2019: Martin Truex Jr. won the Gander RV 400 at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.
