Recapping events that took place in the sports world on this day
The history of sports is both vast and rich, thanks to the existence of so many different ones and the longevity associated with them. With so much history to cull through, Athlon Sports wanted to offer the opportunity to look back and see what memorable things happened or milestones were reached on a specific date.
With that in mind, June 26 is a day in which the three players who comprised one NBA team's championship run were drafted and an active NFL player was arrested for murder.
1906: The French Grand Prix began on closed roads outside of Le Mans, marking the first Grand Prix motor racing event. Ferenc Szisz won the two-day race.
1972: Roberto Duran won the lightweight title with a 13th-round knockout of Ken Buchanan at Madison Square Garden. This was the first championship of Duran's storied career.
2002: The NBA Draft kicked off at Madison Square Garden. The Houston Rockets selected Shanghai Sharks center Yao Ming with the first pick.
2003: The NBA Draft was held at Madison Square Garden. The Cleveland Cavaliers took St. Vincent–St. Mary High School (Akron, Ohio) forward LeBron James with the first pick, the Denver Nuggets selected Syracuse forward Carmelo Anthony with the third, the Toronto Raptors got Georgia Tech big man Chris Bosh with the fourth, and the Miami Heat snagged Marquette guard Dwayne Wade with the fifth. James, Bosh, and Wade won back-to-back NBA titles with the Heat.
2005: Birdie Kim won the U.S. Women’s Open by two strokes at Colorado's Cherry Hills Country Club.
2013: Massachusetts State Police arrested New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez for the murder of Odin Lloyd in North Attleborough. Hernandez was convicted of first-degree and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
