Recapping events that took place in the sports world on this day
The history of sports is both vast and rich, thanks to the existence of so many different ones and the longevity associated with them. With so much history to cull through, Athlon Sports wanted to offer the opportunity to look back and see what memorable things happened or milestones were reached on a specific date.
With that in mind, June 30 is the day in which several baseball milestones were reached and the Soviet Union and Indiana Hoosiers played each other in basketball.
1978: San Francisco Giants first baseman Willie McCovey hit his 500th home run in a 10-9 loss to the Atlanta Braves at Fulton County Stadium.
1985: The Soviet Union national basketball team beat the Indiana Hoosiers 74-54 to win the Kirin World Basketball Championship in Tokyo.
1986: Bo Jackson made his professional baseball debut with the Double-A Memphis Chicks. He played 53 games with Memphis before the Kansas City Royals called him up in September 1986.
1995: Eddie Murray recorded his 3,000th hit with a single off of Minnesota Twins pitcher Mike Trombley in a 4-1 Cleveland Indians win at the Metrodome.
1998: Chicago Cubs right fielder Sammy Sosa hit his 20th home run in the month of June in a 5-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field.
