This Day in Sports History: May 9

Recapping events that took place in the sports world on this day

The history of sports is both vast and rich, thanks to the existence of so many different ones and the longevity associated with them. With so much history to cull through, Athlon Sports wanted to offer the opportunity to look back and see what memorable things happened or milestones were reached on a specific date.

With that in mind, May 9 is a day in which an emotional NBA playoff moment took place and MLB recorded a first-of-its-kind triple play.

1887: "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" performed internationally for the first time. The show was performed in London for Queen Victoria.

1930: Gallant Fox won the Preakness Stakes by three-quarters of a length, en route to winning the Triple Crown.

1965: Frank Robinson pinch-hit with an injured thumb to drive in two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Cincinnati Reds a 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field.

1989: Atlanta Falcons guard Bill Fralic testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired then by Joe Biden, on steroid use in the NFL. Fralic estimated that 75 percent of all NFL lineman used them.

2001: After Accra Hearts of Oak beat the Asante Kotoko Sporting Club 2-1 in a soccer game at Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra, Ghana, Kotoko fans began throwing seats and bottles onto the field. Police responded by firing tear gas into the crowd, causing a stampede that killed 126 people. The venue is now known as the Accra Sports Stadium, and this tragedy remains the worst stadium disaster to ever take place in Africa.

2007: Utah Jazz guard Derek Fisher returned from caring for his daughter to play against the Golden State Warriors in Game 2 of the NBA Western Conference Semifinals. Fisher entered the game in the third quarter to a standing ovation at EnergySolutions Arena and hit a critical three-pointer in overtime to give the Jazz a 127-117 win. After the game, he revealed that his 11-month old daughter, Tatum, had been diagnosed with retinoblastoma.

2015: The Pittsburgh Pirates recorded the first 4-5-4 triple play in Major League Baseball history in a 7-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park.
