The 2022 USFL season is picking up steam as the 10-week regular season nears its end. Teams are doing what they can to win crucial matchups during the final weeks of the campaign, with their main goal being a playoff berth and, ultimately, winning the 2022 USFL Championship. Looking for the latest USFL odds, previews and picks? OddsTrader has you covered.

The division-leading Birmingham Stallions and New Jersey Generals have already locked up their postseason spots and won’t stop at anything less than winning the 2022 USFL Championship Game. Only time will tell which other teams will join them in the playoff tournament.

Although the Stallions and Generals are surely the favorites, it isn’t a guarantee that either team will be USFL champions. Fortunately, the latest odds help paint a picture of which team could emerge as the league winner.

Attendance at Legion Field and Protective Stadium has been spotty at times, but a variety of concerns, including some springtime storms, have played a part. The nascent league also continues to draw plenty of attention through its various TV outlets.

With the regular season closing out after Week 10, a two-week postseason will unfold at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio is drawing nearer, followed by the USFL title game on July 3.

The undefeated Birmingham Stallions and the 7-1 New Jersey Generals appear to be clear frontrunners at the moment, but there are several teams that could give them a run for their money.

That’s especially true in the South Division that the Stallions currently head up, where the New Orleans Breakers continue to lurk.

Heading into week 9, let’s check in on the USFL winner futures market for a look at the favorites and possible value selections.

USFL Winner Prediction

Birmingham Stallions (+175 at FanDuel)

Few should be surprised that the Stallions are FanDuel’s +175 favorites to win the 2022 USFL Championship.

Birmingham has been the best team in the league throughout the season, entering Week 8 with a perfect 7-0 record. The Stallions have succeeded thanks to dominance on both sides of the ball, leading the USFL with 26.9 points per game while only allowing 17.9 (No. 2).

Many tabbed the Stallions as a sleeper pick with good value at +750 prior to the start of the season, and those who jumped on that opportunity are seemingly sitting pretty for the time being.

Coach Skip Holtz has smartly gone with the hot hand at quarterback for the most part, as J’Mar Smith has been effective helming a talented air attack that includes high-upside targets Victor Bolden, Osirus Mitchell, and Marlon Williams, and added speedy Jeff Thomas in a trade with the Maulers.

The Stallions narrowly escaped their Week 8 game against the Breakers, winning with a last-second field goal that propelled them.

Their 10-9 victory brought the most uneven performance of the year from Smith. His lingering leg injury has continued to inhibit him from delivering crisp, catchable passes. This is absolutely something worth considering when betting on the Stallions.

Meanwhile, the defense has been the USFL’s best overall at bringing pressure, which has led to 14 sacks, seven interceptions, five fumble recoveries, a safety, and a defensive touchdown.

Birmingham is allowing a tiny 186.6 passing yards per game as well, and the unit could get even more ferocious down the stretch as it further gels and non-contending teams potentially get even more careless with the ball.

Their three interceptions against Kyle Sloter last week was the difference-maker in the contest. Can they continue to dominate opposing offenses? If they do, they can overcome an offense bogging down at the worst part of the year.

A Stallions-Generals showdown for the USFL title looks like the likeliest outcome at this point, one that would be a rematch of the league’s first-ever game and which would test Birmingham’s defense significantly. Nevertheless, the Stallions still look like the slightly more complete team, especially with running back CJ Marable getting more comfortable by the week.

USFL Championship Contenders

New Jersey Generals (+200 at FanDuel)

The Generals were another strong preseason value at +700, and they’re still a sharp pick at this price given their chances of reaching the championship game.

New Jersey does have some tough competition in its own division, where the only other two teams that have the look of legitimate contenders, the Breakers and the Bandits, also reside.

Even though the Stallions are FanDuel’s 2022 USFL Championship favorites, the Generals aren’t that far behind them at +200 odds.

After the Week 1 loss to Birmingham, it’s been a non-stop journey for New Jersey. The Generals have now won six straight matchups ahead of Week 9 and plan to do what they can to make sure that this year’s championship belongs to them.

It’s hard not to like the Generals when they have the best run game in the league. They average a USFL-best 165.9 rushing yards per game, along with 10 touchdowns on the ground (No. 1).

Few teams have slowed them down and that’s a trend that should continue into the postseason.

New Jersey’s pair of standout running backs in Darius Victor and Trey Williams, and versatile receiver KaVontae Turpin, who seems to be developing into a USFL version of Deebo Samuel, could truly blossom during the second half of the season.

The Generals enter Week 9 tied with the Stallions with a league-low 128 points allowed and has been impressive against both the run and pass. Notably, they've surrendered only 254.1 total yards per contest as well.

No matter how good a team is, it’s always tough to score against the Generals and it’s like the saying goes: defense wins championships.

New Orleans Breakers (+300 at FanDuel)

With most of the attention on the Stallions and Generals, the New Orleans Breakers are flying under the radar as a title threat. After all, their +300 odds to win the 2022 USFL Championship show that they could catch some people by surprise.

The Breakers are 5-3 to start the USFL season and their only two losses actually came from the Generals and Stallions. Aside from that, it’s been tough to slow down New Orleans and its talented cast.

Despite being the third-best team, the Breakers have the top passing attack in the league, with Kyle Sloter racking up 1,750 passing yards — nearly 200 more than the next best team.

Whether they can overcome Sloter’s occasional interception and limited arm strength is a considerable question when looking at the best value plays down the stretch.

They have four pass-catchers with at least 200 receiving yards, making their game plan tough to predict.

The Breakers have arguably looked as good as the Stallions and Generals at times, especially on offense. Sloter has led an impressive passing attack that features standout receivers Jonathan Adams and Johnnie Dixon, as well as tight end Sal Cannella. Running back Jordan Ellis has also done a solid job as a lead back on most weeks.

However, New Orleans’ defense has had some slip-ups, and the Breakers have lost to Birmingham and New Jersey by nine and 10 points, respectively. The defense has tallied an impressive 11 sacks and snagged five interceptions, however, and if it can step up in potential postseason opportunities by causing some opportune turnovers, this bet could pay off.

USFL Championship Sleepers

Tampa Bay Bandits (+1600 at FanDuel)

The Bandits were my preseason pick to win the USFL championship, but quarterback Jordan Ta’amu hasn’t always lived up to expectations. Todd Haley’s club also lost to the Breakers, their competition for a possible second-place finish in the South, by 31 points.

They did impressively hold their own against the Stallions, dropping a 16-10 decision in Week 2, but they’ve yet to be tested otherwise.

A rematch with the Breakers could decide a playoff berth, which awaits in Week 9. Then, the Stallions finish off Tampa Bay’s campaign in Week 10.

That’s a particularly arduous path to travel in the second half, and the Bandits also have yet to really establish a consistent ground attack that can help Ta’amu out.

There’s simply been an immense amount of pressure on Ta’amu’s shoulders in a league that isn’t tremendously pass-friendly. He’d probably fare better in the NFL.

The longer odds are explained by that series of challenging circumstances, making the Bandits strictly a longshot wager to roll the dice on if your bankroll can support it.

USFL Playoff Format

The first USFL Playoffs are scheduled to begin on June 25 once the regular season wraps up. The top two teams from the North and South divisions will play a semifinal game and the two winners will meet in the inaugural championship game a week later.

Both playoff games and the championship game will be played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
