WNBA Refs Facing Backlash for Decisions in Caitlin Clark's Playoff Debut
After a historic rookie season, No. 1 overall pick and Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark was set to take on the Connecticut Sun in her playoff debut on Sunday. This was one of the most highly anticipated games in WNBA history, with ticket prices higher than the total of every game in last year's league finals.
This is primarily because of Clark, as she had one of the best rookie seasons in the league's history. Prior to the game, she was named the unanimous Rookie of the Year, while making the All-WNBA First Team. These are two incredible accomplishments, adding to the excitement of the playoff matchup.
That said, fans were disappointed as they felt like the reffing was particularly bad in favor of the Sun. One fan noted that this was an "embarrassment" from the WNBA's admin, as it "killed momentum" of the game.
Many other fans called out the refs out, too, in comments that followed. "This referee crap is beyond ridiculous," one fan said, with another adding that the refs are "legally blind."
One fan even said "I won't watch once the refs eliminate the Fever." Another even went as far as to say that "This is the worst officiated basketball game of all time."
Another fan pointed out that the time keepers were messing up, saying, "The timekeepers can't even keep time."
The Fever went on to lose the game 93-69, as they are now one game away from elimination. Hopefully, both the WNBA and the Fever can turn things around to make it a more exciting series.
