Morgan has gathered plenty of experience in a short amount of time
At just 29, forward Alex Morgan has experience that goes beyond her age for the United States Women's National Soccer Team. She's also among the teams most popular players and has excelled at every level that she's played at.
Now Morgan is looking for more success as Team USA prepares for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. Morgan is quite active off the field as she has numerous endorsements, has been on video game covers, and has done some modeling. But it's her work on the field that will play a role in U.S. Soccer winning its fourth World Cup title. Here are five things to know about Morgan as she makes her third World Cup appearance.
The numbers speak for themselves
Morgan is seventh all-time in team history with 101 goals scored. She just needs six more goals to tie the legendary Michelle Akers and nine more to tie current teammate Carli Lloyd. Her 163 caps put her second on the current roster, and her 42 assists rank Morgan in the top 15 all time. After this World Cup is done, Morgan could climb into the top 10 in career caps. Morgan has been a member of the senior team since 2010, but prior to that, she suited up for the Under-20 team for which she contributed 10 caps and five goals.
Morgan has been productive throughout her career
Like many of her teammates, Morgan also attended a Pac-12 school. Morgan spent her college days at California where she played in 67 games, scored 45 goals, and helped the Golden Bears make four consecutive Women's College Cup appearances. Her club career, which began in 2010, has seen Morgan take her talents to the WPSL, USL W-League, UWS, the D1F in France, and currently the NWSL. Since 2016 Morgan has worn the uniform of the NWSL's Orlando Pride. When you put her professional career together Morgan has totaled 120 caps and 52 goals combined.
She has quite the trophy case
Morgan has won a total of 18 championships during her illustrious career. Some of those include the 2015 Women's World Cup, the Under-20 Women's World Cup in 2008, a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and three titles while playing for Lyon in France's D1F. She's also won 18 individual awards and is a member of Team USA's All-Time Best XI.
Morgan doesn't fear the international stage
In addition to the last three Women's World Cups, the 2008 Under-20 World Cup, and the 2012 Olympics, Morgan also has suited up for Team USA in three Algarve Cup tournaments (2011, 2013, 2015), all four SheBelieves Cups (2016, 17, 18, 19), the last two CONCACAF Women's Championships (2014, 2018), and the 2011 Four Nations Tournament. Morgan is more than prepared to make another impact on the global stage.
Morgan along with Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe are the captains of the current squad, and Morgan is among 14 captains in USWNT history.
