Press' prior World Cup experience will play a major role in Team USA's success in France
As one of the more popular players on the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, forward Christen Press is also a very important player as Team USA makes its way to the FIFA Women's World Cup in France. Her international experience will be vital as her team looks to win its second straight World Cup trophy and its fourth title overall. She's one of seven forwards on the U.S. roster, and she's one of three players representing the NWSL's Utah Royals FC. With the Women's World Cup drawing closer, here are five things to know about Press.
She's no stranger to the World Cup stage
Heading into her second World Cup appearance, Press was a member of the 2015 championship team in Canada. She played in four matches there where she registered one goal as Team USA posted a 3-0-1 record in those games. Don't be surprised if Press increases that total in France.
Press has other international experience beyond the World Cup
In addition to her experience in Canada Press has also played in the 2016 Summer Olympics, the 2014 Tournament of Brasilia, two Algarve Cups, two CONCACAF Women's Championship Tournaments, two SheBelieves Cups, and last year's Tournament of Nations. Overall Press has contributed to eight championship teams.
Press has been a part of the Team USA program since 2008
Press started her national team career with the Under-20 team. Then she suited up for the Under-23 unit starting in 2009 (six caps and four goals total for the junior teams), and has been a part of the current team since 2013. Today Press ranks seventh among her teammates in caps (115), third in goals scored (47), and just 30, she's the fourth-youngest forward with Team USA.
She's had success at the club level as well
Since 2010 Press has taken her game to the NWSL, USL W-League, the WPS, and Sweden. And after wearing the uniforms of six different teams Press has registered a combined 165 caps with 96 goals. She has proven herself as one of the best players in the game.
Press is one the most accomplished collegiate soccer players as well
Most sports fans think of football when the Stanford Cardinal comes to mind, but Press is one of the greatest women's soccer players in Stanford's history. Press is the Cardinal's all-time leader in points (183), goals (71), assists (41), and shot attempts (500). She also ranks seventh in games played (98) and fourth in games started (95). While at Stanford, Press was a member of the 2009 and '10 Pac-12 Championship teams and played in three straight Women's College Cups (which decide the national champion) from 2008-10.
