Did players get paid at the World Cup?

Yes. FIFA paid roughly $400 million to the 32 teams that competed in Russia, with World Cup champion France earning $38 million, runner-up Croatia netting $28 million and third-place Belgium taking $24 million, respectively. From there, it was up to each individual nation’s football federation to determine the players’ payment.

For example, 19-year-old French forward Kylian Mbappe earned roughly $22,500 for each of France’s seven World Cup matches, plus a bonus of approximately $350,000 after winning the title, 4–2, over Croatia. Arguably the brightest star of the tournament, Mbappe reportedly donated all of his $500,000-plus World Cup earnings to Premiers de Cordee, a charity that provides free sports instruction to hospitalized and disabled children. Vive la Mbappe!
